Successful participation of our Department at the 44th SEBBM Congress celebrated in Málaga:
Our colleague and "Ramón y Cajal" Fellow, Dr. Rafael Molina (left), presented his work developed in Denmark (NNF-CPR-University of Copenhagen) and received the 2nd MDPI-SEBBM Best poster Prize.
Our PhD student Daniel Muñoz-Reyes (right), working under the supervision of Dr. María José Sánchez-Barrena was awarded with the IUBMB Best Short Talk Presentation Prize at the Protein Structure & Function Meeting celebrated in the Congress.

The Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM), in collaboration with BRUKER Española S.A.,  has awarded Dr Antonio Chaves-Sanjuán with the “José Tormo” Prize for his work published in PNAS in 2017 and performed at the Dept. of Crystallography and Structural Biology, Institute “Rocasolano”, under the supervision of  Dr MJ Sánchez-Barrena. This prize gives recognition to the best piece of work performed by a young researcher in a Spanish laboratory, and published during 2016-2017 in any of the areas related to Structural Biology. Dr Chaves-Sanjuán will give a conference entitled Las fenotiazinas regulan la función sináptica interfiriendo en la formación del complejo NCS-1/Ric8a: Un nuevo enfoque para el síndrome X frágil at the XL Congress of the SEBBM, that will be held in Barcelona (23rd-26th October 2017).

Dr MJ Sanchez-Barrena  July 2017
Our colleague, Dr MJ Sánchez-Barrena, a young researcher at Institute “Rocasolano”, has been awarded with a very competitive “Leonardo” fellowship from the BBVA Foundation. She will be able to continue her research on synapse alterations (contact among neurons) that are present, among others, in pathologies such as Alzheimer´s, dementia or Huntington disease. Her research is aimed to design molecules that are able to restore these contacts, avoiding memory loss and improving cognitive ability in earlier stages of the disease.

The Grupo Especializado de Cristalografía y Crecimiento Cristalino (GE3C) awarded the
2017 'Xavier Solans’ Prize to Dr. Teresa Domínguez-Gil Velasco (a former PhD student by Dr. Juan A. Hermoso Domíguez) for her excellent article Activation by Allostery in Cell-Wall Remodeling by a Modular Membrane-Bound Lytic Transglycosylase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa, published in Structure (2016) 24, 1729-1741. This award recognizes the work of young researchers who perform their research in Spain in the field of crystallography and crystal growth.

The Executive Council of SBE has awarded the "2015 Manuel Rico-Bruker" Prize to Dr. Juan A. Hermoso, for his extensive CV, especially in recent years, and his important contributions in the field of Structural Biology. Juan A. Hermoso is a Research Professor of this Department. He is author of more than 144 publications in international journals, and co-author of 5 books. His main research field is related to unravel the mechanisms of virulence and pathogenesis and the means to circumvent them, using structural biology. His work focuses on proteins of the bacterial surface related to disease via key functions like host-pathogen interactions, division, antibiotics resistance or the remodeling of the peptidoglycan framework.

The SBE-33 Prize has been awarded to Dr. Cecilia Artola (a former PhD student by 
Prof. Juan A. Hermoso), for her excellent work on the recycling of the bacterial cell wall and its implications for antibiotic resistance.

High-School students show interest on Crystallography

Two highly motivated students from a high school have visited our Department in the context of a program of the Comunidad de Madrid that links School and Enterprises. Both students have shown interest on research work and, especially, on crystallography. They have purified and crystalized a recombinant protein, they have also taken some diffraction data, and now they are aware of the importance of protein structure.
